On a dry and sunny circuit, the first session of today's free practice was held for the Grand Prix of Germany in Hockenheim. Jos was the first driver to set a lap time at the beginning of the practice. On his first run he set a time of 1:49.515. Unfortunately he did not improve this time during the first session, causing his 20th place. Rubens Barrichello drove a total of three sessions with a best time in his third session of 1:47.240, good for a fifteenth position.

The circuit is very suitable for powerful engines due to its long straights. Although both McLaren's took it easy during the first half-hour, they both set the fastest time at the end with David Coulthard fastest in 1:44.979 followed by Mika Häkkinen in 1:45.383. Jean Alesi was doing very well. He constantly competed with both McLaren's causing a third time, followed by Damon Hill and both Ferrari's of Irvine and Schumacher.
