Cloudy, fresh, but still dry was the weather that marked the start of the second free Saturday morning practice in preparation for the European Grand Prix on the circuit of Jerez de la Frontera in Southern Spain. Almost every driver improved his time in the second session compared to the first session. Exception to this rule was Jean Alesi who went off the track at the start of the session damaging his front wheel suspension in the process. Michael Schumacher didn't improve as well because he continued on a used set of tyres. Towards the end of the session both McLaren's broke through the 1:21 barrier, while Barrichello parked his car to a heap of tyres besides the track. In the end Coulthard, with 1:20.738, topped his teammate Hakkinen who clocked 1:20.856. The top 6 was completed by Frentzen, Panis, Berger and Villeneuve. Jos could only improve a little to 1:23.742, good for a 20th position. Salo was 21st with 1:24.429. In the combined results of both free practices of today Jos eventually was 21st and Mika Salo 22nd.
