Third practice on Red Bull Ring cancelled due to heavy rain

Published on 11 July 2020 by Mike Motilall

The third and final free practice for the Steiermarken Grand Prix has quite literally fallen into the water. Due to a severe downpour it is considered not to be safe to send the drivers out on track hence the practice has been cancelled.

As heavy showers have been forecasted for the entire day on and around the Red Bull Ring, it remains a big question whether qualifying, starting at 15.00 hrs. local time, will get underway. In case that qualifying will be cancelled today, there remain two possible options. The first one is to move qualifying to Sunday morning. This has happened numerous times already in Formula 1, the last time being last year in Japan.

Should it be decided that qualifying can also not take place on Sunday morning, then the results of Free Practice two will determine the starting grid for the race. In that case Max Verstappen will be allowed to start from pole as he topped the board yesterday during that session.
