Compared to last year, Max can already feel the improvement. “Like everyone, we’ve taken a step forward. The RB16 feels better than last year’s car. The car is quick all-round. The reliability looks good too. It was a positive day with both the car and the engine working well. That’s what we like to see.”

Max reflects on productive first day of testing: 'RB16 a step forward'

Max Verstappen lapped the Circuit de Barcelona Catalunya 168 during the first day of pre-season testing ahead of the new Formula 1 season. With this impressive lap tally, the Aston Martin Red Bull Racing driver became the most productive driver of the day. His 1:17.516 was the fourth quickest time. Reigning champion Lewis Hamilton was fastest, ahead of Mercedes colleague Valtteri Bottas and Racing Point’s Sergio Perez.

“It is always important to do a lot of laps”, said Max to Verstappen.nl. We’re happy with today. We learnt a lot about the car and we’re able to gather a lot of data. It’s a long day but we were able to test a lot, which is the most important. We’re not looking at lap times yet; we’re focussing on ourselves.”
