Dietrich Mateschitz: 'Best preparation in a long time'

Published on 18 February 2020 by Kees-Jan Koster

Red Bull owner Dietrich Mateschitz has confidence in the coming Formula 1 season. The Austrian shed light on the coming season and the Austrian Grand Prix on the verge of the test week in Barcelona, in an interview on Speedweek.com.

Red Bull owner Dietrich Mateschitz is looking forward to the coming Formula 1 season with high expectations. Not only because the progress of engine partner Honda is promising, but also the continuity of the two Red Bull race teams, Aston Martin Red Bull Racing and Scuderia AlphaTauri (previously Scuderia Toro Rosso), gives hope for a strong season.

Answering the question why he has so much confidence in the new Formula 1 season, the Austrian says: “This year, we clearly have higher expectations in comparison with previous years. Our engine partner Honda has done an excellent job in the winter. We did more kilometres on the test bench than ever before, without any issues. The power unit enables us to compete at the front in terms of performance and reliability.”

Furthermore, according to Mateschitz, it is important that the teams of Red Bull and AlphaTauri stayed the same. “Yes, continuity is important, everything is well coordinated. All key positions have stayed the same. The early issues we had at Red Bull in 2019, will not be a problem this year. All data from the computer and wind tunnel simulations are better than previous year, and we are convinced that this will be reflected on track. That means that I hope we will be able to compete for the world title.”

Also, the fact that the driver pairings in both teams stayed the same, is according to the Red Bull owner, an advantage: “All drivers have proved their experience. Max has everything it takes to become champion. Alex has surprised everyone with the difficult task he accomplished in his first season. And Daniil and Pierre are in a position to keep up with the leaders.”

On the question if the Grand Prix at the Red Bull Ring, which is popular with Dutch race fans, will continue after 2020, the Austrian answers: “I think we will continue. A project like this is for the long term. Last year we renewed the MotoGP for five years. Chase Carey enjoyed being at previous races and wants to keep the Austrian Grand Prix, so it will not be a difficult to renew.”
