Max previews Spa Saturday and Sunday: 'Opportunities in the race'

Published on 31 August 2019 by Stefan Meens

After Friday practice at Spa-Francorchamps, Max Verstappen spoke to Ziggo Sport’s Olav Mol for the Formula 1 Café broadcast, reflecting on his first day at the Belgian Grand Prix. Despite ending the day only sixth fastest, Max remained positive. “The car felt good, we were just not able to run our normal power modes so we lost quite a bit of time on the straights.”

“With the engine modes we used, the long runs looked good. During qualifying Ferrari will be able to use a lot of power, so they’ll be difficult to beat. I hope to be closer to Mercedes on Saturday; then there’ll be opportunities in the race”, explained Max.

Ahead of Sunday’s Grand Prix, the predicted lower temperatures could play a factor. “If it’s colder on Saturday compared to Sunday, that would be a bigger issue then the other way round. Normally during qualifying we would be a bit more conservative which would normally mean you come out better on a Sunday by changing settings on the wheel.”
