Max Verstappen voted Driver of the Day in Hungary

Published on 04 August 2019 by Kees-Jan Koster

Max Verstappen is after his second position on the Hungaroring in Budapest for the fifth time this season voted as ‘Driver of the Day’. Fans voted during the Hungarian Grand Prix around the world, the Dutchman received the most votes.

For the first time in his Formula 1 career Max started from pole position. At the start he stayed in the lead and also in a beautiful fight with Lewis Hamilton, halfway the race, the Dutch Aston Martin Red Bull Racing driver stayed ahead.

A risky but successful strategy of Mercedes, to have Hamilton come in for a second pit stop, caused the Brit to close the gap, and Max on old and worn tyres was not able to keep him behind. After falling back to P2, there was enough space for Max to also make an extra pitstop and set the fastest lap and get the corresponding extra point.

Therefore, Max will return home from Hungary with nineteen points, and closes in on Valtteri Bottes, who is second in the championship, with only 7 points behind. Again a fine result for Max, who was supported during the weekend in Hungary by thousands of Dutch fans wearing orange, on the Max Verstappen grand stand.
