Max on 2017: "A valuable season"

Published on 19 November 2017 by Stefan Meens

With one race the go, the 2017 Formula 1 World Championship is almost finished. For Max Verstappen it was a campaign of mixed feelings. During Exact Live, an event organized by one of the Dutchman’s sponsors, Max reviewed his season. Below part one of the interview.

Max, today we are at an event of Exact, which means you are introduced to plenty of new technology. How are you with the old stuff? We saw you struggle with an old computer and tape recorder. “It’s not really my thing. This sort of stuff is before my time, so I’m not used to it.”

Are you interested in new technology? “Absolutely, it’s something to keep an eye on. Especially if you can use it yourself in everyday life.”

In partnership with Exact, you driven several virtual reality laps on different tracks. What was it like? Is it time to upgrade the Red Bull Racing simulator in Milton Keynes? “The quality of virtual reality can still improve, but it does make it more realistic than before. However, it is tiring on the eyes." (for all Exact Mix Reality videos, go to http://mixedrealitybymax.nl/)

Only one race to go, how would you rate your season? “Fairly positive with two wins, but in general this season was a missed opportunity. We failed to finish too often which has to be improved on for next year.”

Are there any things you’ve learned this year, apart from another year’s worth of experience? “Yes, I think it was a very valuable year. It’s character building. You have to stay positive in the tougher moments and we’ve had plenty of them.”

You’ve had some amazing races this year. What do you prefer? Dominate at the front or a fight until the finish? "I prefer dominance, across a whole season."

You’re team has made huge strides compared to the start of the year. How did you influence the progress? “Mainly by pointing out where the car needs to be improved. Then it’s up to the team to design no parts that make the car better. They’ve done a great job this year. It’s shame we weren’t there at the start of the year. It does however show the team can change things quickly.”

Are there specific things on the car you influenced that suit your driving style? “No fundamentals. It’s more things like the position of the pedals or my seating position, but that’s about it. You could adjust more, but for me the car felt good."

The winter break is approaching, made any plans yet? “Not yet, I should probably start planning. But it won’t be racing!”
