Max sixth in Hungaroring FP1

Published on 22 July 2016 by Stefan Meens

Max Verstappen started his Hungarian Grand Prix weekend with a sixth place in the first free practice session. Lewis Hamilton was fastest, followed by Mercedes team mate Nico Rosberg and Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel. Daniel Ricciardo finished FP1 in fifth.

Esteban Guitierrez and Kevin Magnussen do not participate in the opening session of the weekend. Charles Leclerc takes over driving duties at Haas F1, with Esteban Ocon replacing the Danish driver at Renault during FP1. At the start of the session, the Hungaroting is still damp, prompting the drivers to do their installation and early laps on the intermediate Pirellis.

Because of the relatively cool temperatures, the track dries slowly. It takes until 25 minutes into the session, that we see the first driver set a time on slicks; Valtteri Bottas on mediums.

With half an hour to go, the usual suspects work their way to the front; the two Mercedes, both Red Bulls and the Ferraris. Lewis Hamilton then sets a blistering lap on the super-soft compound. The world champion’s fastest lap is not matched by anyone.

His team mate Rosberg and the Ferraris of Vettel and Raikkonen also set times on the super-softs, with Red Bulls continuing to run on the softs. It results in the Mercedes topping the timing sheets, followed by two Ferraris. Both Red Bulls round out the top six.
