Max in fourth and third after second qualifying

Published on 12 July 2014 by Stefan Meens

After a laborious second qualifying session, Max Verstappen will start in fourth and third in race 2 and 3 at the Moscow Raceway. Once again, it was FIA Formula 3 European Championship leader Esteban Ocon, who proved to be the fastest man at the Russian track after securing pole for both remaining races.

At the beginning of the session, it is not the usual Dutch suspect at the front as Dennis van de Laar tops the leaderboard. However, order is restored with Max settings the fastest lap eight minutes into qualifying. After that, Jordan King takes the prime spot before Ocon underlines his superior form. His 1:26.650 grants the Frenchman pole position ahead of Tom Blomqvist and Antonio Fuoco.

Verstappen junior has to settle for fourth place one the race 2 grid with a 1:27.178. His second fastest lap gives him P3 for the third and final race grid of the weekend with only Ocon and Blomqvist ahead of him.

Max: “To be fair, it wasn’t that bad a qualifying session. After my first stint, I was in first and when I hit the track on new tyres, I was stuck behind Fuoco for a couple of laps. That cost me a couple of tenths. Ocon was too fast today but I reckon I could’ve beaten the rest.”
After the session, the race organisation launched an investigation to find out if Max was speeding in the pit lane. Unfortunately for him, he was found guilty. “Luckily they didn’t give me a grid penalty but they did give me a fine. Regardless, I’m going to give it my all tomorrow!”
