Jacques Villeneuve will start on pole position ...

Published on 12 October 1996 by Verstappen Info Page

Jacques Villeneuve will start on pole position tomorrow in the last Grand Prix of this season. Hill starts besides him on position 2. Schumacher, Berger, Hakkinen and Irvine are numbers 3 thru 6. Jos Verstappen starts on position 17. The qualifying session was stopped due to a red flag after only five minutes after a heavy crash of Johnny Herbert in the Casino Chicane just before the pit lane entrance. Luckily Johnny escaped unhurt and was able to resume his qualifying. The morning free practice sessions were wet at the start but the circuit became dry later on. Jacques Villeneuve was fastest too, followed by Hakkinen, Barrichello, Irvine, Hill and Coulthard. Jos had a small collision with David Coulthard due to which the nose of Jos' car had to be replaced. The incident was due to a misunderstanding for which Jos afterwards apologised to David Coulthard. See Japanese Grand Prix Results for the complete results.
